Speech is divided up into 13 categories:

DDA

Dramtic Duet Acting -- In both type of duets [Humorous Duet Acting [HDA] and Dramatic Duet Acting], two people perform a part of a play. They must be memorized. Two stools/chairs and/or a table may be used.

Time Limit: 8 minutes

DI

Dramatic Interpretation -- In both types of interpretation [Humorous Interpretation [HI] and Dramatic Interpretation], one person presents a play using two or more characters. It must be memorized. There are no props.

Time Limit: 8 minutes

EXT

Extemporaneous Speaking -- The speaker is given a choice of three current event topics. The speaker then has 45 minutes to prepare a speech using books, magazines, newspapers, etc.

Time Limit: 6 minutes

IMP

Impromptu Speaking -- The speaker is given a general topic [quotations, proverb, words and phrases, or proper name]. The time limit includes preparation and deliverance of the speech.

Time Limit: 8 minutes

OD

Oratorical Declamation -- The speaker presents an essay, speech, or editorial that is persuasive or inspiration and has been publish by someone else. It must be memorized.

Time Limit: 8 minutes

OO

Original Oratory -- The speaker prepares an original persuasive speech. He/she/it may use notes or memorize.

Time Limit: 8 minutes

OC

Original Comedy -- A humorous original speech that is organized around a theme. The speaker may use notes or speak from memory.

Time Limit: 8 minutes

PRO

Prose -- A reading of a selection from a novel, short story or biography. Two different eight-minute pieces are to be prepared. A different piece is presented in each round. The script is held during the performance.

Time Limit: 8 minutes

RADIO

Radio Speaking -- The presentation of a newscast, including a commercial. The speaker is provided a fifteen-minute broadcast of which he/she/it must cut down to five minutes. The broadcast is then read into a "microphone."

Time Limit: 8 minutes

SOS

Special Occasion Speaking -- The speaker delivers an original speech for a special occasion, which is to be determined by the speaker. It may be given from notes or memorized.

Time Limit: 8 minutes

VERSE

Poetry -- Two different six-minute pieces are to be prepared. The poem[s] should relate to a theme.

Time Limit: 6 minutes
